IS IT TIME FOR “THE TALK?”

By Nancy McClure

Many people would wonder what “The Talk” is, really the sex talk happened many years ago.  This talk is one that many families consider more difficult than the sex talk.

The planning for the end of life talk.

This is a very difficult subject for everyone; we would all like to think our parents will continue to live forever without issue.  Unfortunately, too many people wait until it is too late and must make decisions in emergency situations.

What do you need to talk about?

Of course there are the practical things, such as wills, power of attorney, and funeral plans but there are also other subjects to talk about.

What is important to them?

Who do they want to make medical decisions?  In the state of Missouri there is no law to allow the spouse to make decisions unless there is a Medical Directive in place.  The hospitals will make the decision what care to provide and may go to extreme measures to keep them alive.

When should you start talking and planning?  You know the answer is now.  In fact, this is a talk everyone should start and keep up to date as times change.  You never know what the future holds.

The state of Missouri has a great brochure to help with the talk.  You can get the brochure by going to the Attorney General’s page under publications and download the Life Choices book. https://ago.mo.gov/other-resources/publications
